BKS Iyengar Dies and This Is What Is On The Cover of Yoga Journal?

 Article originally published here

Like I said before, the Yoga Journal is not about yoga. BKS Iyengar, one of the most prolific yogis of all time dies, and there is not one mention of it on the cover. I am sure they have a little snippet in the book. But if this is a magazine that educates people about yoga, it should be up front and  center. The whole magazine should be about him and his contributions to yoga. But it isn’t. It is a yoga flavored fashion/fitness magazine. It is in the same category as Shape and Fitness Magazine.

I understand that people are all excited because Kathrine Budig is on the cover with very little photo shopping but this is just smoke and mirrors. They are trying to keep their current base and draw in some of the people who were threatening to leave. However, Kathryn, who is probably crazy awesome and amazing, is still a yoga celebrity and all the content is still the same.

I believe that yoga is at a crossroads. The energy of change is here. We can continue on this road of materialism and body focus and continue to reduce yoga down to a set of alignment rules or a fitness exercise akin to Tae Bo or Cross Fit or we can reintegrate its spiritual aspects and positively change not just the body but the world.

We the students and teachers of yoga have to make that choice. It is not up to Yoga Journal. It is up to us.

While I agree with the gist of what you say, as someone who used to work in publishing, they would have finished and probably printed the magazine before Iyengar died. So we can’t fault YJ for not featuring him on the cover.

I don’t know about that because this months magazine is a direct response to the disaster that was last months magazine. The disaster happened at the same time that Iyengar died so I don’t believe that.

Actually, what Genny says is correct. I’m frustrated too – but I know for sure, the magazine is done months in advance. Their reaction is perhaps not from the last issue but from a discussion panel prior to the last issue, but in enough time to make changes to this one. I have written for YJ on numerous occasions and can tell you my copy has been due 3-4 months prior to production. Edits and layout have to happen as well. So the content is decided upon well in advance and has little room for change once layout is complete.

Online has a much quicker turnaround and can react. Which, they did. Next issue is a possibility. And I will be crossing my fingers!

I gave up on yoga journal a couple of years ago now because I stopped feeling like it was about yoga anymore! It is pretty pathetic and embaressing for the editors I must say not to have a tributary cover for this great master!

Knowing the lead times for the UK Yoga magazines, I’m pretty sure they would have printed long before Iyengar died. Last week we delivered copy for the November issues with Christmas content and that will be on sale in October. The magazines we woke with are usually 6-8 weeks ahead of time. Let’s hope this is the reason that there’s no mention.
