Meet Jen Rene Jen ran a successful Mysore group in DC and is now practicing with and assisting her teacher, Tim Miller, at the Ashtanga Yoga Center in Encinitas, CA. An Ashtangi’s Journey Thorough Postpartum Bi Polar Disorder
Marcie Le, one of the Ashtangis here in Charlotte, recently revealed her story of Postpartum Bi Polar disorder to the community. I was blown away. It never even crossed my mind that this calm, poised woman working diligently beside me had this story inside of her. Marcie told me that Ashtanga helped her with her Postpartum mood disorder. This is what I love about Ashtanga. Without even knowing what was going on, the practice was still doing it’s work. I am so glad that Marcie did this interview. I am so glad she chose to share her words with us. It has opened my eyes to the courage of Marcie…
AYP Interviews Ashtanga Dispatch: Connecting w/ Ashtanga Through the Written Word
I am a fervent believer in supporting what I what to see more of in the world. If you follow the Ashtanga Yoga Project on Face Book, you know that I share more articles from other writers then I do from my own blog. That seems kind of backwards, right? I did not start blogging because I wanted fame or fortune. I started blogging because I wanted the world to know that Ashtanga Yoga was more then pretty people doing handstand. Ashtanga is a way of being. It is 8 principles that bring sanity to the craziness we call life. Everyone is worthy of this peace. Anyone can have it. When other…

Kino MacGregor: World’s First Yoga Channel
When Kino MacGregor asked me to take a look at her new project, I of course said, “Yes!” I have always admired Kino’s work ethic. When it comes to innovative ways to spread Yoga around the world, she always seems to think a few steps ahead. When I saw the new project, I immediately thought, “Kino is starting her own yoga channel. Brilliant.” When it launches, the OmStars channel will be the first of its kind. OmStars, an online Yoga channel started by Kino and Yoga teacher, Kerri Verna, will provide a comprehensive online platform that will allow practitioners to effortlessly integrate authentic Yoga experience into modern life. The channel will provide:…

Just an Average Girl: The Gift of Ashtanga, Authorization and Illness
I am so excited to share this story. Kira Williams was surprised with Sharath’s blessing to teach and a devastating illness all within a few years of each other. “I’ve never really seen myself as anything special, just an average girl.”-Kira Williams The media can paint a picture, that to be successful in Ashtanga, one has to be superhuman. Kira Williams’ story shows what an average girl with an indomitable will can achieve. APP: When did you start Yoga? Kira: I walked into my first yoga class last century! lol, it sounds so long ago, but it was April of 1999 and I had just quit smoking and was painfully skinny and was…

Ask the APP: What is Svadyaya/Self Study?
I recently received a question asking for clarification on Svadyaya. Two Schools of Thought on Svadyaya Svadyaya means studying yourself and any work you do on yourself is self study. This definition is most popular among modern students of Yoga. There are three reasons that I believe this to be true. If a student reads the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, without any commentary, one relies on the etymology of svadyaya which is, “self study”. Patanjali does not define Svadyaya in the verses themselves. The second reason it is popular is because it is more PC. In an attempt to not offend students, some modern commentators or Yoga teachers will use this more palatable…
Ashtanga Vinyasa VS Ashtanga Yoga
So I am beating a dead horse here but I want to keep you guys posted on what is going on. I recently wrote two posts, Whose Ashtanga Should I Practice and What Is The Ashtanga Practice For? in response to a post where a popular teacher talked about Ashtanga needing to evolve. I pointed out, in both articles, that this person was coming from a purely physical perspective and that Ashtanga Yoga was never meant to be purely physical. The teacher responded back to me, thus proving my point. Hi Shanna, I agree in principle to what you are saying, but not in practice. I do think you’re comparing apples…
