After posting a few videos of Sharath on the APP Facebook page this morning, I got a few private messages and some not so private messages about his intentions. Why was he stepping into this arena after not really being a big fan of it? I have never read or seen anything where he said You Tube was the devil. He sells videos on the official Ashtanga Research Institute website so he has to to see some positive use for them. I have seen him speak out against using it as a replacement for a teacher. That is all. And even if he did speak out against it, he is entitled to change his mind. He is a human being. He has never claimed to be infallible or perfect.
Lastly, Sharath’s thoughts on You Tube videos really are not a big deal in the scheme of the practice as a whole. It would be one thing if he decided to flip the closing postures and throw them in the beginning of Primary Series. Okay, I get it. That is something to be concerned about. You Tube videos, on the other hand, not a big deal.
Just because he puts some videos up does not mean he is saying that You Tube is the be all end all. Lets not throw the baby out with the bath water. I don’t know Sharath personally. Like we don’t talk on the phone or grub out at Applebees so I don’t really know why he did the videos but here is my two cents. The world we live in is digital. If he doesn’t put up videos, someone else will. If he does it, he ensures that the information is accurate. Second of all, they are really helpful for those who are currently practicing. I learned quite a few things watching these this morning.
The short answer is I don’t know why Sharath is doing You Tube videos, and unless you spoke with him this morning, you don’t either. We are all just giving our opinions based on our own personal filters. Opinions are good. That is why I blog. I have tons of them. However, the ultimate answer still is, who knows. If I find an answer directly from Sharath, I will post it!!
