Yoga Sutras For Modern Day Life: Devotion-The Ultimate Key To Success

    August 10, 2015 / 1 Comment

Yoga Sutras of Patanjali 1:23 Or (samadhi can be attained) by devotion to ishvara.   Defining the Sutra: Joy and well being can be found by staying connected to supreme consciousness. The first law of thermodynamics is that energy can not be created or destroyed.  It is only transformed. By staying focused on the part of you that can never be created or destroyed, you realize your essence. This essence is supreme consciousness. Supreme consciousness animates us all. As we move through the world, we become blinded by collecting experiences and things and lose our ability to connect to supreme consciousness and the world around us.  Yoga removes that which blinds us from seeing the luminescence…

Yoga Sutras for Modern Day Life: How To Get the Quickest Results in Yoga

    July 28, 2015 / No Comments

Yoga Sutras of Patanjali 1:22-The time necessary for success depends on whether the practice is mild, medium or intense.   Defining the Sutra Everyone can have success in yoga but the more intense the practice the faster the results. It is important to reiterate that Patanjali is referring to yoga as the cessation of the fluctuations of the mind .  He is not merely talking about yoga as a physical practice. Many commentaries on the Sutras, allude to 9 levels of practice that are  not mentioned in the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali but are mentioned in other texts and supposedly directly relate to this verse. I don’t think these 9 levels are…

    Ashtanga Yoga: Mind the Gap

    July 23, 2015 / 5 Comments

Today, in led Primary class, our teacher stopped us. There were people in the group, who in Mysore class, practice Third Series, but she stopped us all. Somewhere around Bujapidasana, it started to fall apart. We started to talk about this tug of war  between what we thought we should be doing and what we actually should be doing. The gap between what our mind wants and what our body needs. Ashtanga often gets a bad rap because people don’t want to be honest about the gap between the pose that is being presented and what their body can actually do on that given day. Unfortunately, two things usually happen. People either…

Yoga Sutras for Modern Day Life: Good Things Come To Those Who Work For It

    July 21, 2015 / No Comments

Yoga Sutras of Patanjali 1:20-21: To the others, Objectless Samadhi could come through faith, strength, memory, contemplation or by discernment. To the keen and intent practitioner, Samadhi comes very quickly.     Defining the Sutra: Sutra 1:20 is explained further later in the Sutras so we won’t do it here. Verse 1:21 is extremely important. It says that Samadhi comes very quickly to the intent and focused practitioner.  For more on Samadhi, read the past segments of this series. A brief and limited definition of samadhi is freedom from suffering caused by attaching happiness to thoughts. Patanjali says that the intent practitioner can have freedom from suffering very quickly. Why is It Important?…

You’re Only Human…Unless You Are A Yoga Teacher On the Internet

    July 15, 2015 / 3 Comments

Yoga Sutras 1:8-9: Misconception occurs when knowledge of something is not based upon its true form. An image that arises on hearing mere words without any reality (as its basis) is verbal delusion.   There is something about  being in the media that dehumanizes people. I am not just talking about the person in the news. I am also talking about the people who are reading and viewing the news. I didn’t understand this until I became a blogger. Before that, I would bounce around the internet commenting and saying whatever I felt like. It is amazing how stuff will fly from your finger tips on the net that you…

Drop The Story: Why Did Sharath Change Mysore Policy?

    July 13, 2015 / No Comments

So this was recently added to the KPJAYI website Students who are applying for Sharath’s class must have studied at least 2 months with any of our Certified/Authorized teachers( mentioned in our teachers list) before coming to study with Sharath in Mysore Shala. After seeing it, I did a little perusing on popular Ashtanga boards and blogs because I already knew what was going to happen. Story time for Ashtangis. I even tried to come up with one myself before the silent voice within said, drop it. Sure enough, people were already ready to riot based on stories. Story time is why we have yoga. Because we make up a…
