Ashtanga Straight w/ No Chaser: Wisdom from Authorized Teacher Larry Hobbs
Larry Hobbs is the only Authorized teacher in North Carolina. His home Shala, Hanuman Asthanga Yoga, is in Wilmington NC. He is a quick trip from my home in Charlotte and we consider him to be the authorized teacher for Y2 Yoga. Larry Hobbs has been practicing Ashtanga for over 14 years. He started out with Pattabhi Jois and currently practices with Sharath and has assisted him in Mysore. Larry is compassionate to his students and passionate about Ashtanga. He is a perfect example of parampara and teaches the practice the way he was taught. No tricks, frills or chasers. He allows the practice to do the work and speak for itself. This is a…

Strength and Grace: 10 Quotes From Female Greats of Ashtanga Yoga
I was very excited to receive a copy of Strength and Grace by Alicia Beale and Derick Yu from Ekam Inhale. Strength and Grace , a collection of essays from female Ashtanga practitioners, inspires and provides amazing insights into the world of Ashtanga from a female perspective. Similar to the book, Guruji by Eddie Stern, Strength and Grace contains amazing stories of transformation and practice with Ashtanga Guru Pattabhi Jois. However, this sets it apart. It includes, The rules of authorization and certification The logic behind ladies holiday How to practice during and after child birth How to balance Ashtanga with children and family life A brief foray into Ayurveda and Ashtanga…

Ashtanga Teacher Certification/Authorization Is Rubbish?
Today, I saw a comment where someone said, “yoga does not belong to anyone. Certification and authorization is rubbish.” Lets not throw the baby out with the bath water. Being authorized or certified does not guarantee that a teacher knows what they are doing but having no standards doesn’t guarantee it either. Certification and authorization says that, the Jois family, who are the lineage holders of Ashtanga Yoga, feel that this person seems to have a good enough understanding of the practice to teach it. It does not mean that they own yoga or that the certified/authorized teacher owns it either. It is just a way for students to know…
Ashtanga Yoga Vs Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga
The term “Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga” has been used to separate the physical practice of Ashtanga from the full 8 limbed experience. I don’t know where this started but both Sharath and Pattabhi Jois, lineage holders for Ashtanga Yoga, made it clear that Ashtanga Yoga is an 8 limbed practice. Below is an excerpt from a recent conference with Sharath on Ekam Inhale Blog Sharath started the conference by saying that the first four limbs of Ashtanga Yoga (Yama, Niyama, Asana and Pranayama) are the external limbs that you can practice. The next four (Pratyahara, Dharana, Dhyana, Samadhi) are internal. He went on to explain the Yamas and Niyamas. The Yamas…
“There are some people who know yoga very well, but often these aren’t the popular teachers” Sharath
Found a great blog, New Memories, with recent Conference notes from Sharath. Excerpts from Sharath’s conference below… Yoga and Karma In the Bhagavad Gita it is said that once we practice yoga and put effort into knowing what yoga is, we will carry this on to the next life. Our rebirth will take place in the family of yogis, scholars or a family rich in knowledge. Whatever karma we have created in this life, we will carry on to the next life. The body is just like clothes. We have to change our clothes. The atman leaves the body and takes rebirth. Our good actions and bad actions – everything…
